Joe was a boy who always answered, "No,"
no matter what anyone said.
He said, "No," if you asked, "Do you want to wake up?"
and, "No," about going to bed.
He said, "No," about eating Brussel Sprout Pie
and, "No," about ice cream, too.
He said, "No," about going out to play barefoot
and, "No," about wearing his shoes.
His mommy and daddy worried a lot,
wondering, "What will we do with our boy?"
"He says, 'no,' when we tell him it's time to clean up
and, 'no,' about playing with toys."
They met with the doctor, they met with the teacher,
but nobody knew what to say.
The only thing that Joe ever did,
was tell everyone, "No," all day.
They asked their friends, they asked their neighbors,
they asked the girl from the grocery store.
"How can we help so Joe won't keep
telling everyone, 'no,' anymore?"
It was late at night and, lying in bed,
Joe's mommy said, "We must help and quick."
Joe's daddy sat up and said, "I have an idea.
I know the perfect trick."
The next day, they sat Joe down on their laps
and looked him straight in the eye.
Daddy did most of the talking,
because Mommy had started to cry.
"Your mother and I are worried, Son.
We don't know what else to do."
"All of this saying, 'no,'
is not very good for you."
"But I think I know what I can ask.
I think I know what to say."
"Joe, will you please keep on saying, 'no,'
to everyone every day."
And Joe looked up at his mom and his dad.
Do you know what he said? Can you guess?
The answer that Joe gave his daddy and mommy...
was a big ol' happy, "Yes."
